At one point several years ago, I found a list of “things to do instead of smoking” posted somewhere, and I re-posted it on my quit-smoking support forum. Forum members added more ideas to the list, and it grew until it became the current version:

Have you ever wondered, “How am I supposed to relax (or “unwind” or “concentrate” or whatever) now that I’ve quit smoking?” I think a lot of us imagine that there’s this hole in our lives that smoking used to fill, and we wonder what we’re going to use to fill that hole with now that we don’t smoke any more.

I’m often asked a question like, “What do you do when you slip and smoke a couple of cigarettes?” The person who asks this question will usually go on to explain that it wasn’t their fault; they’d run out of meds, or they couldn’t get patches until the next day, and their husband or wife wasn’t being very supportive…

The Myth of the Irresistible Urge
On the first day of my quit, November 19th, 2001, there were moments when I wondered if I could make it through the next 10 minutes without a cigarette. I’m sure it never occurred to me that there would come a day when I could say I’d made it through 10 days without one, let alone 10 years.
And yet, here I am, more than 10 years later, still smoke-free.
